Spring pistols are designed to offer the fun of plinking targets without having to worry about running out of gas, or having to charge up batteries. They're low powered, so suitable for shooting at distances of 10 meters or less, and as they're spring powered, you have to manually cock back the slide (which loads 1x BB into the chamber, and readies the gun to fire).

Since you are loading the pistol yourself every shot, it is important to use high quality 0.20g BB's to make sure they feed correctly. If you accidentally cock the pistol twice without firing, remove the magazine, pull the slide to the rear, and give the gun a shake - the additional BB should come free.
