Pistons are a vital part of the AEG system. Factory standard pistons are usually constructed out of polycarbonate, and since the sector gear (main gear) is metal, the teeth of the piston wear out, and can strip. Replacing the piston with a steel-tooth piston gives greater durability to your rifle, although it won't necessarily improve performance. That's more the realm of the piston head. The piston head has an O-Ring that is responsible for pushing air through the cylinder, and out the air nozzle. You can add a bearing piston head for improved durability, or use a silent piston head (this must be paired with a silent cylinder head) to decrease the amount of noise from each shot. There are a lot of options, and it really comes down to what you're trying to achieve.
