An AEG's trigger system is generally quite simple - there is a physical trigger, that when pulled moves a sliding contact into position between the main contacts, allowing current to flow to the motor. The trigger spring returns it to its resting position when released. Over time the trigger contacts can bend, arc (carbon), or burn away completely, especially with higher voltage batteries. To improve the reliability of this design, MOSFET's can be installed.

MOSFET's are an often misunderstood part in airsoft. Manufacturers co-opted the term when designing smart control units for airsoft gearboxes, and it has stuck in the zeitgeist. Realistically a MOSFET is a simple regulator that sits between your battery and motor, storing power. When the trigger is pulled, the MOSFET supplies the power to your motor in a more regulated manner, drastically reducing wear on the trigger contacts, and making your gun more reliable in the process.
