In the real steel world, you can get tracer rounds to help you see where your bullets are travelling. In airsoft things work a little differently - you need both a tracer unit, and tracer BB's for it to work. The tracer BB's are glow in the dark, and the tracer unit is the light source allowing you to see exactly where your BB's are going. It is invaluable for corrective aim, especially in night games. Tracer units are typically mock silencers that screw onto the end of your barrel. Inside the unit there is a sensor that triggers a flash, supercharging the glow in the dark ammo, so that you can see where your shots are landing. The main differences between them are their feature set (e.g. BB compatibility (green only, or red & green), simulated muzzle flash, etc.) and aesthetic e.g. how big/small they are, as well as their overall style.
