In airsoft, the mainstay (and industry favourite) is the humble AEG. Battery powered replicas, offering superb value, and unmatched practicality. AEG stands for "Automatic Electric Gun", and it really is a case of "What it says on the Tin" - they have an internal gearbox, and motor, and when you pull the trigger the battery spins the motor, allowing the replica to fire. Granted, that doesn't sound terribly exciting, however in reality, it means every time you pull the trigger, your gun fires, and you can get an impressive rate of fire (more BB's down range faster).

Internally, most components of an AEG can be tweaked/upgraded, so you can tinker and customise your replica to suit how you play. Whether you want a faster rate of fire, more responsive trigger, or increase the range & accuracy, with an AEG the world is your oyster. The P90 was designed by FN Herstal, and is a close-quareters PDW (personal defence weapon) designed for military transport etc. It is classified as a Sub-Machine Gun (SMG), however it packs a serious punch (both in real steel, and in airsoft). Despite its minimal profile, you will not find the P90 lacking - it is a bullpup design, meaning the trigger sits in front of where the bullets/BB's load, giving you a longer barrel than you would otherwise have. The magazine in the real steel world is high capacity, and top-loading. For airsoft it retains the top loading, and you can get magazines ranging from 65 BB's to 300 BB's, ensuring you're ready for whatever the skirmish field throws at you.

Internally, the P90 uses a V6 gearbox, widely considered to be the most reliable design, due to its engine-block nature. Few guns have the space required for such a design, whereas the P90's blocky design makes it perfect for. The motor is a long-type, and held securely in a motor cage. Above the gearbox you'll find the battery compartment, which is small due to the limited space - as such, it is recommended to use small 7.4v Lipos for best results.

Rotary hop up chambers are a variation of the basic design, and their primary benefit is that you have more granular (finer) conrtol over the amount of backspin applied to your BB. This is achieved by the depth of the hop up arm, and the rotary wheel offers greater control over this depth, so you can more accurately fine-tune your shots.
